Masters of War!

Three hundred years. An age of chivalry and brutality. Of star empires.

Princes and generals. Soldiers and spies. An age where heroes rally to hold back the darkness. And even the most unlikeliest of hands may determine the fate of millions. An age of duty, loyalty, and terrible choices.

An age...of war.

First Strike collects some of the best BattleTech short stories from some of the game's favorite authors. There are stories by Randall N. Bills, Blaine Lee Pardoe, Jason Schmetzer, Jason Hardy, Jeff Kautz, Dan C. Duval, Loren L. Coleman, Kevin Killiany, Victor Milan, Phaedra Weldon, Steven Mohan, Jr., Dayle A. Dermatis and Louisa Swann.

This project promised to be perfect for me, I was a huge Battletech fan that was disappointed with the direction of the Mechwarrior Dark Ages series. Plus Loren L. Coleman was one of my favorite authors, so even though I did not really enjoy the first compilation I purchased this second one. It was pretty much a mistake, this one was worse and for $8.99 I feel I was over-charged. There is alot of quantity but the quality is lacking.

Almost all of the short stories have spelling/grammar errors. Blatant ones, that should have been easily caught. And I know these stories were proofread because one had a suggested edit that was not deleted. People make mistakes but the sheer number of them was frustrating.

As for the stories themselves, none of them were particularly good. Some of them were bad. Really bad. My least favorite was Callie's Call. Looking back at the table of contents, I can't really find a favorite. The ones I enjoyed more tended to have a larger role...Read more

i had higher expectations of this book than maybe i should have. the first volume was better. this one had lots of litte stories on the periphery (literally and figuratively speaking) of the battletech world. i just have a hard time caring about characters who only show up once and their actions not being part of anything bigger. that's just personal preference though. this book also seemed thrown together very haphazardly as there were a ton of basic spelling errors and grammatical things that made me stop and have to re-read things here and there.

I agree with another reviewer that it's a little much to pay for this at $8.99. I disagree with some of his points though. I actually liked the story about Callie. Some of the stories were on the tedious side, but several of them were pretty good.
