This book seems a little expensive for what you get. Its mostly a showcase of Citadels models painted to very high standards with some basic info on tools, brushes, priming, etc. The painting techniques discussed are presented in alphabetical order which doesnt make a whole lot of sense. The step by step instructions are not done that well and are not exactly complete from step to step (ie - they left out some of the work they did from one pic to the next). Could have used a section on painting jewels and non-metal metallics. The most useful part of this book is the section on color theory and mixing paints, and the book does have good highlight charts on what colors to use in different highlight stages (as long as youre using the citadel line of paints - which are another 4 bucks a pop....use the much cheaper acrylics out there). I will keep this book because the pictures show good examples and color schemes, and the color charts are useful. However, there is nothing in this...Read more

As another reviewer pointed out, this book mostly showcases incredibly talented paint jobs with a few pointers here and there on what tools and brushes you might need to do the job. As it is a GW book, it certainly doesn't lack GW product marketing either.

I think my biggest gripe is that the techniques are described, but not in a step-by-step fashion. A look at the blending section shows you the difference between a layering technique and a blending technique, but it's not very specific about how you are expected to get the same result.

My next gripe is that there is no structure in the book itself. If I am just starting out, I have no way of knowing where to begin! The technique sections are alphabetical, but blending is certainly not a beginner skill. It's as if the book says: You put it together, you primed it, now read pages 32 through 56 and good luck! What could really be used here is a complete start to finish section with very basic techniques. After...Read more

I was looking for a book that would teach me how to paint well and I was considering the book put out by the Foundry miniature line. How to Paint Citadel Miniatures is better because it looks at techniques that the Foundry does not cover. The biggest selling technique for me was using washes/inks. This book is not just about painting Golden Demon winning pieces. Games Workshop shows you quick techniques that look great on the table.

This book is amazing! I don't understand what people don't like about it. The book gives you step-by-step on instructions on different techniques, how to use color, and shows you several miniatures from start to finish, and this is not everything. This is not a showcase of miniatures! This is not an attempt for Games Workshop to advertise! There are several pictures of 'Eavy Metal pieces as well as Golden Demon award winners. Frankly I found these inspirational! They are in only a fraction of the book and you'll notice the techniques the book...Read more
