Product Review

Myst is the most popular and enduring of all CD-ROM games, and Riven is a much more difficult sequel to Myst. Whereas Myst's puzzles were all at the same level, Riven's puzzles become progressively more difficult and lead to multiple endings. Sleepless gamers will need this guide to get to the end.

Amazon.com Review

Using a hints-before-solutions formula (so you won't accidentally expose something you don't want to), Unofficial Riven: The Sequel to Myst: Strategies and Secrets divulges all of the secrets you'll need to conquer each puzzle and win the game. Rather than splitting the helpful prodding and complete disclosures into separate sections, the book treats each puzzle individually with the advice escalating slowly across each page. The hints are pretty strong and the proximity of the solutions tempting, so you'll want to crack this one with care if you want to preserve the mystery of Riven. You'll find plenty of references to the original Myst story throughout to help you understand the people of Riven. This guide also includes excellent maps of the islands and information on the game's multiple endings.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have hint book., April 13, 1998

Usually when I see someone using a hint book to get through a game I want to yell at them for not trying to just finish the game using their brains. But after playing Riven, the sequel to the bestselling game Myst, I can see why this book comes in handy. Riven puts you into a world filled with many complicated layers of puzzels and suprises. There is no chronological order to the game, so some people may finish it one way and someone else will get though it a different way. The really good thing about this hint book is that it actually gives hints. It reveals just tiny parts to you so that it doesnt completely ruin the game for you by explaining everything you have to do. You still have to use you brain, which after all, is what this game is about. The book also contains maps of each Island of Riven to help you if you lost. I recommend this book to anyone who owns the game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful but at times confusing., January 20, 1999

I quickly compared this book to a hints and solutions book I have for Myst and there are some things missing. For one, the Myst book had pictures that showed you what was being written about while there are no pictures in Riven. Drawings are provided which are helpful. At times you are expected to get back to locations and start from there with no idea how to get back without help. Even with these shortcomings the book is worthwhile especially for the price.

THis book is a strategy guide to help mme beat the game. It gives me a lot of strategies and secrets to the game. It also lets me play the game earier. I go through five islands on the game and they all have names. It is a good book. I really enjoy reading it. It is about how to beat the game quicker. The book tis \two books in one. The first book tells me how to beat the game without ben giving me the nswers. The second one does give me the answers and it is easier.
