Product Description

Doctor Impossible—evil genius, would-be world conqueror—languishes in prison. Shuffling through the cafeteria line with ordinary criminals, he wonders if the smartest man in the world has done the smartest thing he could with his life. After all, he's lost every battle he's ever fought. But this prison won't hold him forever.

Fatale—half woman, half high-tech warrior—used to be an unemployed cyborg. Now, she's a rookie member of the world's most famous super-team, the Champions. But being a superhero is not all flying cars and planets in peril—she learns that in the locker rooms and dive bars of superherodom, the men and women (even mutants) behind the masks are as human as anyone.

Soon I Will Be Invincible is a wildly entertaining first novel, brimming with attitude and humor—an emotionally resonant look at good and evil, love and loss, power and glory.

Summary: Entertaining But Does Not Overturn Conventions 2009-01-07
Comment: Well-written and smartly-conceived debut novel from a promising young writer. However, it does not overturn conventions (in fact, other than featuring the viewpoint of the "evil mastermind"--who never manages to appear particularly intelligent--the heroes, villians, and spin on the genre is quite conventional) nor do the characters display any particular humanity beyond standard genre (when I write "genre" I mean an idea of a semi-typical comic-book world) ruminations. It is occasionally laugh-out funny, the plot rarely bogs down, the characters are familiar and occasionally original, and Grossman can really twist a brilliant phrase here and there. However, if you are looking for something bringing originality to the "genre", something that makes it smarter and deeper, look elsewhere.

Summary: shallow, trite and pretty bad, actually 2008-12-13
Comment: the book is a stumbling disjointed mess. it read like a third grade book report, leaping back and forth, CONVINCED it's smart, witty, and well written, and it just plain isn't. i found myself having to flip back pages over and over, trying to make sense of the plot, and the sudden and mysterious shifts in narrative.

a truly painful book to read. avoid it if at all possible.

Summary: a delight 2008-11-27
Comment: I'm amazed by the negative reviews, and glad to see them in the minority. I found this book a delight, and was amazed to see it was a first novel. The book consists of two intertwined stories - one told by a super-villian, the other by a new super-hero. I found the super-villian chapters a total delight, a real joy - the super-hero chapters are interesting, but much less so - that's why i give 4 stars instead of 5. Overall definitely a very good and fun read.

Summary: Half a good book 2008-11-13
Comment: The first half of this book is excellent as we really get into Dr Impossible and how he became a supervillain/evil genius. Unfortunately, the logic of his relationship with his Superman like nemesis and Lois Lane secret love just falls apart during the second half. As does his poorly thought out scheme to defeat the Justice League knockoff and rule the world.

The parts of the book following Femme Fatale are also largely disposable. She's supposed to be our POV character but the POV is pretty bland, we care a lot more about Dr Impossible then her.

I suggest anyone who thinks this might be interesting check out Josh Whedons' Dr Horrible Musical starring Neil Patrick Harris as Dr Horrible available free online. The plots fairly similar but is much more consistent.
