Exhaustive Guide,

This review is from: SOULCALIBUR V The Official Guide (Collectors Edition) (Hardcover)
When you think of a fighting game guide, you don't normally think it should be anywhere close to being this big. And even more than that, you don't generally tend to think that the guide is really all that necessary. Soul Calibur V isn't a too terribly complex game, yet this guide is extremely in depth in a lot of areas, covering every nook and cranny of Soul Calibur V. It's in depth. Sometimes a little too much.
So let's get this out of the way. The guide is big. It's also a hardback. It's so big that if you threw at someone on the street you'd probably kill them (or at the very least, incapacitate them for several days). Generally speaking a lot of guides that are so big usually get that way because there's a lot of unused space on a page or there are unusually large screenshots (or it's double spaced) Bradygames has an enormous habit of inflating their guides. So naturally upon looking at this guide it was hard to discern what was fluff and what wasn't. Turns...Read more

This review is from: SOULCALIBUR V The Official Guide (Collectors Edition) (Hardcover)
The Soul Calibur V guide by Future Press is, by far, one of the best strategy guides I've ever purchased. This colossal sized book has something for everyone. From the casual SC fan to the hardened veterans of the series, there is guaranteed to be something in this guide you will find useful.
For the Casual Fighting Game Fan:
-This book covers the basic mechanics of the game in the utmost detail possible. It also has a section explaining each character's best moves and combos.
For the Completionist:
-The "Extras" section alone will probably warrant a purchase of this guide. This section explains how to unlock all characters, costumes, achievements and more. If it can be unlocked in the game, you'll find it here.
For the Collector:
-This book has an amazing hard cover decorated with some fine Soul Calibur V artwork. There is also artwork of the various characters in each character's respective section.
For the Hard...Read more

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: SOULCALIBUR V The Official Guide (Collectors Edition) (Hardcover)
I've been playing fighting games competitively for nearly 15 years now, and I own precisely three strategy guides. Let's face it - most fighting game guides aren't very good. However, this guide has become my fourth. Other reviews have the details, but it's incredibly thorough and has the all-important frame data. On top of that, it's beautiful to look at.
On the negative side, a few minor errors have already surfaced, and the binding and paper aren't quite as nice as they could be. But it's still an amazing guide that all serious players should own. If you're on the fence, just make the leap and buy it. Even if you don't find it useful (note: this will not happen), you'll be supporting the production of serious strategy guides. Here's to a future filled with more guides like this and fewer of the oh-so-common pathetic ones that barely pass as manual replacements.
