The Orginal X-men's later tales,

This review is from: X-Men - Volume 2 Omnibus (Marvel Omnibus) (Hardcover)
X-men Omnibus volume 2 collects the later adventures of Professor X's original team before the title evolved into The Uncanny X-men. It is no secret that the original Xmen was a bit of sales dud for Marvel when the book launched in the 1960's. Compared to the Fantastic Four, Spider-man and the Avengers the X-men was a title struggling to find an audience and more importantly sales. Volume two collects the superb Roy Thomas stories and more importantly the amazing art of Jim Steranko and Neal Adams. While the book's sales never did match those of other marvel books Thomas' stories combined with the amazing art of Steranko and Adams left enough of an impression on the comics community that Marvel decided rather than cancel the title outright they would at least reprint older Xmen stories.
This volume introduces such recurring characters like Cyclop's brother Havok, Polaris and the mutant Mimic. The X-men take on the Living Monolith, get new costumes and really start...Read more

I received this recently and it was even better than I had imagined. The presentation is fantastic! A large, shelf-crushing collection of the original X-Men's last run before going into reprints followed by the new "Uncanny" X-Men arriving on the scene. The paper quality is awesome and the colors jump off the page. I heard someone compare the Marvel Omnibus collections as seeing your favorite old school comics come to life in HD quality (i.e originals in VHS and Omnibus in Blu-Ray). It's an accurate comparison. I just flip through the book periodically to be dazzled by the art...bigger size, nice bright colors, etc.
The stories in this particular X-Men volume range from a bit hokey (but fun) to really trendsetting (Neal Adams, Jim Steranko art). It is interesting because the latter issues were referenced pretty frequently when the new team took off...Sentinels, Sauron, Havoc and Polaris, etc. It's amazing that right when the series was finding itself that it was...Read more

If you already have the corresponding Marvel Masterworks - The X-MEN # 4, 5, & 6, why should you bother purchasing this Omnibus? After all it's nearly the same thing. Of course, the pages are bigger, the paper is thicker and glossier, there are all the letter pages as well as some extras, one or two of which you might appreciate, such as Jim Steranko's afterward. I own all the Marvel Masterworks as well as the Omnibus and I'm not complaining.
